Consider Doing a Body Detoxification (Update) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. Edward Zimmer

poisonMost people have heard about detoxing the body but few really have an understanding of what this actually means. The situation is complicated by the fact that there are many different supplements on the market that claim to “detox” your body. The problem is that most of these products simply provide you with very low dose herbs that have the potential to promote body detoxification coupled with laxatives. This does not provide a true body detoxification.

The reason is that the process of detoxification is complicated and relies on numerous processes to accomplish the task of transforming and then removing toxins from your body. Simply providing for a swift bowel movement cannot be classified as a good body detox. A good detox protocol addresses the regulation of the many factors involved in this process. This includes balancing the different phases of detoxification. These phases include the detoxification enzyme system; known as Phase 1, the chemical reactions that cause toxins to become water soluble; known as Phase 2, and the transporter systems that get the toxins out of your body; known as Phase 3. The last phase includes much more than releasing toxins via bowel movements. It also includes cell transport systems, skin transport systems, and kidney elimination of toxins. Taking pills from one bottle in the morning and another in the evening does not come close to accomplishing a thorough detox of the body.

Now, many patients have told me that they think they felt better after having used one of these so-called detox products. I can tell you that after evaluating many of these products and programs, the reason more than likely has to do more with the fact that these people clean up their diet for the couple of weeks to a month while doing the so-called detox. Also, these products have great marketing campaigns that convinced people that the product they just bought was truly special. After spending money on a product, most of us have the inherent hope that we had not just been taken. So, the chances of interpreting the outcome of the detox as a positive increase significantly regardless of the product’s true effectiveness, or lack there of.
