Why Perform a Body Detoxification? (Update) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. Edward Zimmer

ancientdetoxmethodThe concept of detoxing the body is an ancient one. Many societies have long traditions of “purifying” the body and accomplished this by many means including fasting or by taking certain herbs. These purifications were usually undertaken to promote better health or clearer thinking. Good questions to ask are whether you really need to perform a detox or is it a good intentioned waste of time?

The first thing to do is to understand what a detox is supposed to accomplish. Simply stated, a detox is meant to stimulate the release of toxins from within your body and then promote their excretion out of the body. The common sense thought is that by getting rid of toxins your body will be healthier.

The second thing to do is to determine whether you are even exposed to toxins that need to be eliminated from your body. This is a question that is fairly easy to answer. We are all exposed to a soup of thousands of chemicals that our bodies have to deal with on a daily basis. Numerous studies have been published that prove this point. As far back as the early 80’s the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) published the U.S. EPA National Adipose Tissue Survey where they took fat (adipose) tissue samples from all over the U.S. and tested them for the presence of dangerous chemicals. The findings were disturbing. 100% of the samples had five different cancer-promoting chemicals identified. The total list of pesticides and other chemical residues found was staggering. More recent tests show that the condition has gotten a lot worse, not better.

The reason is that we are subjected to these chemicals in the foods we eat (pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, preservatives, food colorings, flavorings, etc.), through the air we breath (carpet, paint, building materials, air fresheners, candles, perfume, gasoline, etc.), and from the things we put on our bodies (soap, hairspray, nail polish, make-up, deodorants, tooth-pastes, shower water, etc). The studies lay to rest whether or not you and your family have an exposure. The question that needs to be answered is how much of these substances you have in your body; not if you have them in your body. The problem is that we really do not have an economical way to perform a test that will answer the question of how much you have in your body. The only thing you have to know is that, without any doubt, you have these chemicals in you body.

The final thing to do in determining whether you should perform a detox is to ask if the exposure to these toxins can cause health problems. Again, there is NO DOUBT that exposure to these toxins causes horrible diseases including cancer, autoimmune disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, nervous twitching, and many more. What’s worse is that your exposure to these toxins may not manifest in a disease for many years. Think about people exposed to Agent Orange or Asbestos. These people did not develop cancer in a week, month, or even a year. Most of these people developed their deadly disease many years if not a decade later. The exposure to a toxin a decade earlier eventually caused a deadly disease! So, what deadly or debilitating disease are you or your loved ones brewing? Unfortunately, no one can answer that question for you. The thought scares the heck out of me and that, couple with my personally seeing miraculous changes in some patients, motivates me to detox every six months.

Why perform a detox? The answer is because we know two things without a doubt. First, you have been exposed to numerous different chemicals since you were inside of your mother’s womb. Second, we know without a doubt that these chemicals can be deadly and can cause serious health problems. The only thing we do not know without a doubt is what negative effect these toxins will have on your health. So, do you wait until you find out the answer to this question or do you do something that promotes the release and disposal of these toxins from your body? The choice is obvious to me.
