What is an antioxidant? (Update) PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dr. Edward Zimmer

antioxidantsMedMost people have heard the word Antioxidant and understand that it is supposed to be a “good” thing for their health. Most people have no clue what the word means. You are about to be in the know!

As your body goes about doing the work of keeping you alive each day, many chemical reactions occur on a constant basis. These reactions typically create molecules known as oxidants. These oxidants are vengeful little creatures. They have had something taken from them (electrons) and now they want them back. They will steal back their electrons from anywhere without regard to the damage they may cause. By ripping electrons away from healthy cells these oxidants can damage or kill them. Obviously, this is not a good thing as it can lead to many kinds of diseases including cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, cancer and dementia to name only a few.

But, guess what? Your body is chock full of molecules that can protect you from these bad oxidants. Yep, they are called antioxidants. The antioxidant can do something special. It can give back the needed electrons to calm the angry oxidant. The special thing is that the antioxidant can do this without becoming damaged itself. It remains stable. Some of the more commonly known antioxidants are the vitamins C and E. There are hundreds of others.

It is no coincidence that eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables reduces your risk of most diseases. This is where you get the lion’s share of your antioxidants. If you do not get enough of these foods in your diet make an effort to increase their use ASAP. If you know that you just will not eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis, you should consider taking an antioxidant supplement. The best are supplements that contain a combination of multiple antioxidants instead of just one. One of the best is a blend of some of the most powerful antioxidants called Oxitrol.
